ECT Oekotoxikologie GmbH – Research and Services in Ecotoxicology

ECT is a private enterprise with more than 20 years of experience in ecotoxicology. Through constant involvement in international research projects and cooperation with universities, authorities, and industry clients, ECT keeps up with the state-of-the-art in the field of ecotoxicology and regulatory environmental risk assessment. Based on broad scientific expertise we can provide solutions and develop strategies to solve problems that may arise during marketing authorisation, notification or classification of chemical substances.

 

In the area of biocides, ECT is experienced in preparing and reviewing dossier documents, including IUCLID datasets, of various product types (PT). For biocidal dossiers, we have specialised in the areas of ecotoxicology, chemical fate and behaviour, and physico-chemical properties. Another area of extensive experience is the theoretical assessment of biocidal products by means of mixture toxicity concepts (according to the transitional guidance of ECHA) with the aim to avoid unnecessary testing of the products.


In addition to desk work and related services, ECT conducts a broad range of ecotoxicological tests with aquatic, benthic and terrestrial organisms in its own GLP-certified laboratory or places and monitors such tests in other laboratories.


Apart from services for industry supporting the Annex I inclusion of biocidal active substances and product dossiers, ECT has been engaged in research projects funded by the German Federal Environment Agency that addressed the issue of mixture toxicity in the regulatory risk assessment of biocides:

  • Development of ecotoxicological tests with biocides and eluates: Verification of the suitability of the embryo test with the zebrafish (Danio rerio, DarT). In cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig. 2009 – 2010. FKZ 360 04 029.
  • Ecotoxicological combined effects from chemical mixtures – Part I: Relevance and adequate consideration in the environmental risk assessment of plant protection products and biocides. Coordinated by Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig, and in cooperation with Faust & Backhaus Environmental Consulting GbR, Bremen, and University of Gothenborg, Sweden. 2009 – 2012.   • Ecotoxicological combined effects from chemical mixtures – Part II: Development of ecotoxicological tests with biocidal products and eluates: investigating the suitability of biotests with algae and daphnids to estimate mixture toxicity. Coordinated by the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Leipzig, and in cooperation with DVGW-Technologiezentrum Wasser (TZW), Karlsruhe, and BAM Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung, Berlin. 2011 – 2012.   • Necessity of testing biocidal products and their eluates within the authorization process aiming at an adequate environmental evaluation of mixtures – Extending the database for wood preservatives. In co-operation with DVGW-Technologiezentrum Wasser (TZW), Karlsruhe. 2013-2016. FKZ 3713 64 417.
